1 Corinthians 4: No Subscription Necessary

It seems there is a subscription service for everything these days.

Netflix, YouTube TV, Disney+, and everyone’s pandemic lifeline: Amazon Prime. Did you know you can now even subscribe to Taco Bell?

We are offered these subscriptions and accept because we want persistent access to what they offer (be it media content, free shipping, or tacos (I presume?)). Absent the subscription we recognize that we are left without access and connection.

As usual, God flips this paradigm and instead offers us truly free and unlimited access that He has paid for. Access that in fact is beyond our understanding to grasp or fully appreciate.

You already have all you need. You already have more access to God than you can handle. Without bringing either Apollos or me into it, you’re sitting on top of the world-at least God’s world-and we’re right there, sitting alongside you!
— 1 Corinthians 4:8

The thought that God has made himself so available that I can’t even handle it is at once reassuring and disappointing. For it reveals that it is not He who is elusive or unresponsive, but me. It places responsibility for the limited relationship squarely on my shoulders. For I often feel disconnected or distant from God, and would much rather place the onus elsewhere.

However, armed with this true understanding regarding God’s availability, I am compelled to renew my approach and lean in. For if he is truly persistently within my grasp, I be remiss to not partake. For he paid a truly momentous subscription fee for our sake.
