We like to consider ourselves novel.
To believe our experiences are wholly unique.
For we truly think ourselves special, and resultantly the exception. We accept that there are processes and timelines, but prefer to believe those are more applicable to others. We are one-of-a-kind and therefore excused from typical constraints.
We hold the same fundamental beliefs about our problems. On the surface at least, we think the challenges we face are singular in history. The complexity and competing factors are simply beyond anything anyone else has ever wrestled with. We therefore stand alone on the brink and must face our loss, temptation, or insecurity absent a guide.
What if we don’t though? What if what we are facing isn’t wholly unique in human history? What if a playbook exists and support is already available?
What a humbling thought: The ‘unprecedented’ circumstances that justified our atypical response are not unique, but common. If true, our actions are not excused by novelty, but condemned by a combination of ignorance and arrogance.
This realization is at one moment depressing and freeing. For we would prefer to consider ourselves a unicorn, however there is great comfort in the knowledge that others have experienced and even overcome similar circumstances. Furthermore that we are supported throughout by One who is both timeless and omni-present.
It is time to relent our special-ness and embrace community. For with community comes support and strength we can never manifest alone. We simply must remember that what we are facing is nothing new.
